What is CEM?
Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) is a sexually transmitted disease in horses caused by the bacterium Taylorella equigenitalis. Mares may exhibit clinical signs such as mucopurulent vaginal discharge in up to 40% of cases, as well as potential infertility and abortion. In contrast, stallions typically show no symptoms but can still carry and spread the disease.
Both mares and stallions can become chronic carriers, serving as sources of infection and increasing the risk of future outbreaks. The transmission rate is high, occurring naturally through mating, but contaminated instruments, equipment, and semen used for artificial insemination can also spread the bacteria. Proper quarantine, testing, and treatment protocols are essential to prevent outbreaks and protect equine health.
Quarantine Services
Upon arrival, a qualified Palm Beach Equine Clinic veterinarian conducts a thorough health inspection of all horses.
This initial examination and the required Florida state fee of $1,250 (an additional $100 service fee applies if paid through Richard M. Faver Inc.) officially initiate the CEM quarantine protocol.
Throughout the quarantine period, trained personnel are on-site 24 hours daily, ensuring continuous monitoring and top-quality care.
Mare Quarantine
Quarantine and testing for non-pregnant and pregnant mares.
Stallion Quarantine
Extended quarantine and USDA-required testing for stallions.
